Historically it has proven difficult for Defense secretaries to kill weapons programs. Many Pentagon leaders announce they are ending programs only to see them revived by Congress or be resurrected under a new name. A public announcement about Pentagon spending before the plan has been formally vetted by the ffice of Management and Budget is unprecedented said David J. Berteau a defense budget expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. The strategy may head off some attempts by lawmakers and others to alter it; it will also give Gates a sense of what the real budget fights are likely to be. “It’s a very good trial run to see how much heat is going be generated and how much lighting is going to be thrown at him from Congress and industry” Berteau said. Morrell said Gates would make final decisions on what programs he intends to eliminate or cut over the weekend.
Rawhide Western Town to go under new management

will hand over management of Rawhide Western Town to a new company June 1. A partnership of two companies Western Destinations and AZ Banquet and Events will begin management of Rawhide on June 1 said Stephanie Heckathorne spokeswoman for Rawhide and the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa. Service attractions and other activities at the historic cowboy town are expected to continue uninterrupted she said. The Sheraton is in the Gila River Indian Community. Rawhide relocated to the resort from its North Scottsdale site in 2006. The announcement comes on the heels of a notice the Sheraton filed with the Arizona Department of Economic Security which said 165 people were to be let go.

Sugar Land is the only municipality in Texas that accepts cartons for recycling according to the Carton Council.
