After a week-long meeting in Seattle the Pacific Fisheries Management Council agreed to include 10 days of fishing in the Eureka and Crescent City area this fall as one of three options it may adopt in April. The other two options would shut the fishery just like last year. California’s commercial fishery will be closed again this year and officials are looking into extending last year’s emergency declaration and distributing the remaining $54 million out of an original $170 million appropriation for relief. The state’s renown Sacramento River fishery — on which rides much of the ocean fisheries along the West Coast — is again perilously low. Bleak runs last year shut both commercial and sport fishing along hundreds of miles of coast.
