Keerthi Ekanayake of the Disaster Management Center said that the northern Jaffna Peninsula and the Kilinochchi and Mullaittivu districts had been inundated and that nearly 8000 houses had been destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of people in the north had already been displaced by fighting between government troops and separatist rebels. An additional 10000 people have been displaced by floods in the rest of Sri Lanka Mr. Aid agencies have been evicted from rebel-held territory by the government which said it could not protect them.
